10 billionth song is downloaded

Props to Apple and iTunes for getting there – The 10 billion song mark has just been hit… Not long before they start the countdown for the 100th billionth, right? We’ll soon find out who won the competition too, so stay tuned for that! (and if it’s one of you on the forum, remember us when you’re rich and famous!)

[REMOVED] Apple Adds an ‘Explicit’ Category When Submitting an App

UPDATE:  It seems as though Apple have removed this category choice.

You may have heard of Apple removing a handful of ‘over sexual’ apps, some of which have existed for over a year.  Apparently they’ve been getting a few complaints, which has forced them to remove 5000 applications.

MacRumors reports that developers can now select an ‘explicit’ category when submitting an app.  There’s no doubt that somewhere in that bucket-load of apps hides something important for Apple’s business, as all apps do, so this is a smart move from Apple to get back on track.

It’s good news for all of those developers, but it could be quite devastating for the AppStore when tons of spam (and sexual) applications return.

Failbr3ak Shenanigans

gull1hackWith the recent discovery of a new baseband hole by Sherif Hashim and with some iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS owners stuck on 3.1.3 without a jailbreak we’re now moving headlong into failbr3ak season. Remember the amusing but ultimately frustrating appul0ha1l failbr3ak scam made around the time of GeoHot’s blackra1n release?  Well this time around the scams have got slightly more polished and a lot less amusing.

But don’t take my word for it, check out the immutably omnipresent iPhone Dev-Team’s recent blog post titled ‘Scam Season’:

Don’t fall for these scam sites!  None of them have a 05.12 unlock, none have the 05.11 unlock working on 3.1.3, none have a 3.1.3 jailbreak for newer devices like the ipt3G.

photo1Most recent of the failbr3aks is Gull1hack. Their website sports a nice GeoHot-esque interface and plenty of very recent posts and videos purporting to be evidence of their great new 3.1.3 3GS untethered jailbreak tool. They’ve been shown up to be fake by @musclenerd from the iPhone Dev-Team.

photo 2Next up is the Californian based team of juvenile failbreakers, SpartanBr3ak, who have tried to spam iPod touch Fans and have since pulled their jailbreak from release as they’ don’t appreciate the fake comments’ (lol).  They’ve been shown up on forum and all references and discussions of their scam removed. I have permanently removed one member of their team from this site for the continuing tirade of verbal abuse they sent me over PM, which I now continue to receive over twitter.

It may be fun and games to the scammers but it just creates unnecessary noise and prompts some to upgrade in hope of a new 3.1.3 jailbreak and baseband unlock.  These scammers aren’t community minded people and are only doing it for adolescent mischief or profit.  Expect more scam failbr3ak attempts but don’t believe the hype.

Pro Tip: as with all new firmware releases don’t trust any claims of new jailbreaks or unlocks unless they have been supported and/or sanctioned by the iPhone Dev-Team.  Don’t trust claims by unknown juvenile kids and definitely don’t donate to them so they can buy iPhones for ‘testing purposes’.

‘Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front’ is Now Available

Yes, that’s right, the sequel to the first great shooter on the iPhone, Brothers in Arms, is out where the sun rises early.

Gameloft promised it’ll be out today in a recent trailer, so if you’ve been keeping with the buzz, this should be no surprise.

It takes a different perspective than the first title in the series.  Rather than a third-person, over-the-shoulder view, Gameloft have decided to go along with the first-person shooter.

Therefore, you can expect this to be extremely similar to Moder Combat: Sandstorm which has been highly respected for it’s online play update.

Luckily to increase the iDevices’ gaming abilities, they’ve increased the number of players able to battle it out against eachother online to 6.

It all sounds very interesting, and well-worth the couple of bucks.

Project “Rolando 3″ is down – Help revive it.

Ngmoco have said they’re giving up work on the 3rd iteration of the Rolando series in favour of Eliminate (which is a pretty poor decision, IMO) so there’s now a petition that you can sign if you want them to hear the resounding public voice: Bring back Rolando 3.

Apple Doubles App Download Limit Over 3G to 20MB

Although this may not affect the majority of you here at iPod touch Fans, it’s still something to note down for you iPhone 3G and 3GS users.

Before Apple had quietly made this change, iPhone users could only download applications 10MB or less.  Unfortunately, with the AppStore growing rapidly with far greater apps, 10MB was just too small to download them on-the-go.

Luckily Apple have seen more sense to enlarge this given limit by doubling the previous allowance to 20MB.  This still may not be enough, but it should do for the necessary applications which usually rake in at about 15MB.

Better games now rake in at about 100MB to 200MB, and some increasingly larger.  There’s no doubt that Apple could have risen this limit for their coming of the iPad, which applications will require far more memory to perform on the big screen.

Mobile network providers may not be too happy with this decision, but it’s great news for the average iPhone user.

Apple banning Hackers?

You might remember a user called “Sherif Hashim” from a news article a few days ago? He was the guy who found the baseband exploit for 3.1.3, and the person who’s probably saved many of you from having a carrier locked iPhone after you “accidentally” upgraded last week! Anyway, now when he tries to buy apps legitimately from the App Store, he is confronted with this message:

Could this be Apple punishing him for hacking? Or a failsafe built into the firmware which locks your iTunes account if it detects some weird activity going on? Whatever it is, it’s a bold move from Apple, and it could be part of the greater plan to eradicate jailbreaking all together?

Windows Phone 7 Series Marketplace: App Store beater?

Probably not. But it does look pretty good, and as you can see from above, it has a few apps already that you might recognise from the App Store. Looks a bit more complicated to navigate than the App Store on your iPhones and Touches, but you can’t argue that it doesn’t look the part? Another picture after the break. ‘Street Fighter IV’ is Heading to the iPhone!

The ever-most popular arcade-style fighting title is heading to the iPhone, IGN claims.   Capcom are setting the target release date in March, to release a thought-through version of the game.

It won’t be a quick port.  Instead, it’ll have specially-optimized controls onscreen, such as the typical d-pad and action buttons to the right.

Not only will the controls be recreated however, the graphics will also be scaled down, having minimal loss of detail and colour.  Therefore, the original artwork of the old gen-code will remain the same, but will look slightly crisper on the iPhone’s screen.
